What is a design engineer?

A software design engineer builds the interface, not the enclosure. They sit between product design and frontend engineering: they prototype in code, shape design systems, and ship UI that matches the craft of the design. This is the same question as “what do design engineers do,” answered for software. Mechanical, industrial, and chip design engineers are a different job that happens to share the title.

How this differs from a frontend engineer and a product designer

• Frontend engineer: broader platform ownership, less of the visual and interaction call.
• Product designer: owns the problem and the design, less of the production code.
